| Cancer scare changed her life (Posted 10/8/2009 11:45 am) Belinda was terrified. The 41-year-old wife, mother and health nut, was shocked when her family doctor gave her the horrible news — she had breast cancer. The youngest of three sisters, there was no history of breast cancer in her family, she had been feeling well and had gone for her annual check-up when an “abnormality” had been detected in her mammogram. She had been sure it was nothing. Always the optimist, Belinda was known for “making lemonade” from the lemons life handed her. She groaned inwardly as she thought of the barrels of lemonade she would squeeze this time around. She knew nothing of the treatment she would undergo or the way in which this medical diagnosis would change her life, “if I have a life,” she thought, wryly. The first hurdle was telling her husband, James, and their teenage son, Eric, then the rest of the family. The three of them hugged and cried and hugged some more. “I got more hugs during my cancer diagnosis and treatment than any other time in my life,” Belinda smiled. Telling her boss and friends was almost more difficult than breaking the news to her family. “Everyone was supportive and caring,” the Forest Hill resident said. “I couldn’t have asked for more. It humbled me.” For full story, check out the October 8 edition of the Everman Star.
